Buenos Aires has been chosen as the best city in Latin America to live in and is the only one in the region that entered the highest categories of The Global Liveability Index 2022, annually compiled by the British magazine The Economist.
Buenos Aires ranked closely alongside cities like New York, Rome, and Lisbon, even surpassing Seoul, Tel Aviv, Athens, Shanghai, and Dubai, among others. The global top 5 cities comprise Vienna, Copenhagen, Zurich, Calgary, and Vancouver.
This latest edition of The Economist’s list shows an overall improvement in the quality of life as a result of the end of pandemic restrictions, leading to enhancements in scores for culture, environment, education, and health in most cities. Overall, Buenos Aires increased by almost 3 points since the last ranking and secured the title of the best Latin American city to live in for the eighth time in the last nine years.
The ranking assesses the quality of life in cities based on the following categories: stability, healthcare system, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. In a rating out of 100, the quality of education (100), the healthcare system (87.5), and the infrastructure (85.7) were the most recognized aspects of the city in the report.
In fact, in education, Buenos Aires outperforms cities like Berlin, Manchester, and Amsterdam, while in healthcare, it ranked better than Madrid, Miami, and Sydney, and more than 20 points ahead of Montevideo, the second city in South America.
“The quality of our education, our cultural offerings, and the high human capital make Buenos Aires a highly competitive city globally to attract visitors, international students, and digital nomads,” highlighted Fernando Straface, Secretary General and International Relations of the City.
Moreover, for the first time, the list highlights that the expansion of remote work will generate greater competition among metropolises for their population. In this regard, in 2020, the city of Buenos Aires launched the Digital Nomads BA program, aiming to attract 22,000 remote workers by 2023.
Recently, the city was recognized in the Nestpick ranking as the best city in the region to attract digital nomads, and Holidu chose it as the fifth-best city in the world to combine work and vacation.”
